Election 2008

Tonight we had our Family Election Night. The kids set up Election 2008 right in our house.
We had our waiting room with a brochure on each chair. We had pros and cons for both candidates. We talked about the political process and why it is so important to vote.

The election booth was in our powder room. It is a quite place for everyone to have a minute to think about who they want to vote for.
The election booth (bathroom) was to be used ONLY for voting. If you needed to "go" you had to use the upstairs bathroom.

The ballot was very simple.
Clara cannot read so we printed out photos of each candidate for her to choose from.

We made "I VOTED" pins for each citizen to wear after they cast their vote.

We then counted the ballots. We did ask the kids to take it seriously and not "write in" any candidate (scooby doo etc.).
Our election was very close we had 3 votes for Obama and 4 votes for McCain. It was a fun process. We got the kids talking about what the biggest worry was for them. It seems like Taxes and the War were the 2 big issues on the kids minds tonight.
I hope everyone makes it out tomorrow to cast your vote!

When I picked Ellie up from school on election day she was SO excited. She jumped in the car and proudly exclaimed, "Mom! I voted today too!" "That's so cool," I said. "Who'd you vote for?" Then she paused to think for a second and said, "I don't know...'cause I can't read." They should have had pictures...like YOU!
